A young President John F. Kennedy set the deadline of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth by 1970. Project Mercury and Apollo flights 1 through 10 brought them closer, until 1969 when Neil Armstrong succeeded and uttered those famous words: 'That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.'

The Apollo program ended in 1972 and the agency that went to the moon and showed us our first image of the earth struggled to retain the romance and urgency of its past missions. At that time, President Richard Nixon pushed government departments to raise the standard of their design and communications, which trigged the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA’s) 'Federal Graphics Improvement Program'. One of the first targets for the NEA program was NASA, and the NEA wanted to get a big win on the scorecard. Shortly after, a young and small firm in New York, Danne & Blackburn, received a Request for Proposal (RFP). They were eventually selected to present a new identity to NASA.

In 1974, the partners of the firm – Richard Danne and Bruce Blackburn – presented to NASA administrators in Washington D.C. The work was accepted and would be contained in a ring binder titled the NASA Graphics Standards Manual, an extensive document that included instructions on designing every aspect of NASA’s new identity – from letterheads to space shuttles. The new identity, spearheaded by a logo that would come to be known as the 'Worm', allowed NASA’s departments a common voice through which they could speak as one cohesive unit.

After a less than smooth introduction by NASA, the identity program was rolled out across the organization. But after almost two decades, and many challenges along the way, NASA rescinded the Worm in 1992. The first logo, known as the 'Meatball' was reinstated.

24 years after later, Jesse Reed and Hamish Smyth – Pentagram Associate Partners and creators of last years 1970 NYCTA Graphics Standards Manual Reissue – reached out to Danne to reissue the NASA Graphic Standards Manual as a hardcover book. The original mosaics (dating from as early as 1904), displaying a variety of serif and sans serif letters and decorative elements, were supplemented by signs in terracotta and cut stone. Over the years, enamel signs identifying stations and warning riders not to spit, smoke, or cross the tracks were added to the mix. Efforts to untangle this visual mess began in the mid-1960s, when the city transit authority hired the design firm Unimark International to create a clear and consistent sign system. We can see the results today in the white-on-black signs throughout the subway system, displaying station names, directions, and instructions in crisp Helvetica. This book tells the story of how typographic order triumphed over chaos.

The process didn’t go smoothly or quickly. At one point New York Times architecture writer Paul Goldberger declared that the signs were so confusing one almost wished that they weren’t there at all. Legend has it that Helvetica came in and vanquished the competition. Paul Shaw shows that it didn’t happen that way – that, in fact, for various reasons (expense, the limitations of the transit authority sign shop), the typeface overhaul of the 1960s began not with Helvetica but with its forebear, Standard (AKA Akzidenz Grotesk). It wasn’t until the 1980s and 1990s that Helvetica became ubiquitous. Shaw describes the slow typographic changeover (supplementing his text with more than 250 images – photographs, sketches, type samples, and documents). He places this signage evolution in the context of the history of the New York City subway system, of 1960s transportation signage, of Unimark International, and of Helvetica itself.

Designer: Paul Shaw
Size: 290x250mm
Pages: 144
Publication: 2011
Binding: Casebound book with dust jacket

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1595/5453/products/Cover_e6d3b229-8642-4f55-9ff2-c725edd30f31.png?v=1531085334
graphic-design-manual
Graphic Design Manual: Principles and Practice

Armin Hofmann’s richly varied work is recognised for its reliance on the fundamental elements of graphic form – point, line, and shape – and the economic use of colour and fonts. Behind the purely pedagogic examples of exact proportions, a rich, philosophical thinking shines through, which – moving far beyond the tasks of everyday existence – attempts to expound upon the lessons of life's wisdom.

Designer: Emil Ruder
Size: 230x240mm
Pages: 274
Publication: 2009
Binding: Casebound book with dust jacket

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1595/5453/files/Cover_328f6453-a78e-4ce0-949e-322556973f7f.png?v=1710941575
jurriaan-schrofer-1926-1990
Jurriaan Schrofer (1926 – 1990)

The Dutch designer and polymath Jurriaan Schrofer (1926 – 1990) was one of the defining figures in European graphic design in the 1950s-70s. Working across all genres, from public relations brochures to interior design, and from magazines to advertising and alphabets, Schrofer is particularly regarded as a pioneer in the field of photo books and experimental typography. During the 1970s, he also became involved with government art policy and environmental art, and was an especially active force at the Association of Graphic Designers. The design historian Frederike Huygen describes his work as "research into perception, visual effects and the optical illusion of perspective: or the interplay of letterform, pattern and meaning." This monograph tracks Schrofer's career through a set of thematic chapters: his public relations brochures for various corporations; the photo book designs; his work as a cultural ambassador; advertising design; interior design; art policy and education; typographic experiments; and his art works. Through a mix of archival research and personal interviews with Lella, Massimo, and their many colleagues and clients, Jan Conradi documents the Vignellis' nuanced approach to "cleaning up" an often chaotic and messy society by adhering to a minimalist and structured design method. In soaring glass structures or minimalist canvases, we recognise a time of vast technological advance which affirmed the power of human beings to reshape their environment and to break, radically, from the conventions or constraints of the past. Less well-known, but no less fascinating, is the distillation of modernism in graphic design.

This unprecedented TASCHEN publication, authored by Jens Müller, brings together approximately 6,000 trademarks, focused on the period 1940 – 1980, to examine how modernist attitudes and imperatives gave birth to corporate identity. Ranging from media outfits to retail giants, airlines to art galleries, the sweeping survey is organized into three design-orientated chapters: Geometric, Effect, and Typographic. Each chapter is then sub-divided into form and style led sections such as alphabet, overlay, dots and squares.

Alongside the comprehensive catalog, the book features an introduction from Jens Müller on the history of logos, and an essay by R. Eight designer profiles and eight instructive case studies are also included, with a detailed look at the life and work of such luminaries as Paul Rand, Yusaku Kamekura, and Anton Stankowski, and at such significant projects as Fiat, The Daiei Inc., and the Mexico Olympic Games of 1968. To celebrate its 75th anniversary a facsimile reprint of the magazine will be produced, accompanied by a commentary volume. The magazine dealt with the question, how do aesthetic possibilities arise out of technical discoveries? The great promise of the avant-garde was to be investigated and looked at in the light of the future: even the title refers to the emerging conditions of a media society. Photography and film are central in telehor as they are in the oeuvre of László Moholy-Nagy as a whole. Several of the texts are key texts on modern photography and film-theory and represent important media-historical documents. The reprint makes the magazine accessible again in terms of its artistic and theoretical historical dimensions. Particular attention has been paid to the production process. Thus the volume appears spiral-bound, an ultramodern technique in the mid-1930s. The commentary contains an editorial statement that places the magazine, telehor, in the context of the art and media of the 1920s and 1930s and unlocks the position of the artistic avant-garde at the intersection of two epochs. It also contains new translations: in Hungarian (previously available), in Mandarin as a homage to the original publication concept, in Dutch, Spanish, and Russian, as well as in Japanese as a pamphlet on the occasion of a Moholy-Nagy exhibition.

Designer: László Moholy-Nagy
Size: 220x295mm
Pages: 138
Publication: 2012
Binding: Wirobound & softbound book

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1595/5453/products/01_79ef37d3-48e2-4b46-af4b-3693df173e90.png?v=1484050618
bruno-munari-circle-square-triangle
Bruno Munari: Square, Circle, Triangle

Circle: "God is a circle whose center is everywhere but whose circumference is nowhere." Circle means perfection, cyclicity, superiority of the divinity, but also instability and movement. The designer, facing a blank sheet of paper or a computer screen, is anxious about the first step to take in developing a design. The elements of typography are an obvious starting point, but often do not get the attention they deserve. A thorough understanding of how letters, words, lines, paragraphs and columns are formed, what makes them unique as design elements, and how they express character and emotion are the most essential tools in the designer's repertoire. The basic principles of typographic design transform the utilitarian quality of words, lines, paragraphs and columns into an aesthetic form that conveys both the intellectual meaning and emotional feeling of the message.

Through the relationship between the elements and space, and their rhythm and composition, design not only objectively conveys information but also gives subjective cues for the interpretation of its contents. As a visual form of language, typography is perceived as a whole before its individual parts are read. The surface characteristics of the design the topology create the first impression and derive from the form, size, position, and color of the typographic elements. Captured in a series of transparent diagrams, they reveal a new design dimension and animate the designer to further develop the original conceptual idea. Conceived as a handbook and teaching aid for artists, instructors, and students, this influential book presents Albers's singular explanation of complex color theory principles. Originally published by Yale University Press in 1963 as a limited silkscreen edition with 150 color plates, Interaction of Color first appeared in paperback in 1971, featuring ten color studies chosen by Albers, and has remained in print ever since. With over a quarter of a million copies sold in its various editions since 1963, Interaction of Color remains an essential resource on color, as pioneering today as when Albers first created it.

Fifty years after Interaction's initial publication, this new edition presents a significantly expanded selection of close to sixty color studies alongside Albers's original text, demonstrating such principles as color relativity, intensity, and temperature; vibrating and vanishing boundaries; and the illusion of transparency and reversed grounds. A celebration of the longevity and unique authority of Albers's contribution, this landmark edition will find new audiences in studios and classrooms around the world.

Designer: Unknown
Size: 150x235mm
Pages: 192
Publication: 2013
Binding: Softbound book

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1595/5453/products/01_7658e257-24ee-4ee0-8376-1bfe4b711225.png?v=1560013539
