In the seventies, the city of Isny commissioned the renowned designer Otl Aicher to design a new visual identity. Aicher designed 128 pictograms from 1976 to 1986 for Isny. The result was ‘A City in Black and White’. The Allgäu represented by means of geometrical forms, consistently modern and reduced: firs of strokes, landscapes of lines, towers behind stylised trees. Without colour, only in black and white.
For several years, the pictograms have once again adorned the town’s letterheads, brochures, leaflets and banners and the design concept is still the basis for many print and advertising campaigns. All these illustrations can be found in this reissue of the 1981 original.
