Otl Aicher’s Isny

Otl Aicher’s Isny

dn&co’s latest exhibition to open at its gallery ‘Ground Floor Space’ in Bermondsey is part of the London Design Festival.

‘Otl Aicher’s Isny’ celebrates the work of iconic 20th century German graphic designer Otl Aicher, produced for the German town Isny im Allgäu. Forty years after it was created, the exhibition and limited edition book revisits how Aicher took what was expected of a small tourist town in Southern Germany, and defied it with a kit of 128 pictograms – in a way that was miles ahead of its time. The collection of rare prints will be the most comprehensive collection of Aicher’s Isny work to be seen in the UK.

To accompany the exhibition a limited edition book has been designed. With stops at the Ulm School and Aicher’s former studio in Rotis, this book delves into how this Alpine town shed photography of its postcard-perfect landscapes in favour of presenting itself through a modernist ideal: stark, reductive and entirely black and white.
