Released on September 13, 1985, Super Mario Bros. celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Originally becoming the best-selling video game of its time with around 40 million copies sold worldwide, the game helped define a new era of entertainment and established Mario as one of the most recognisable characters in popular culture.
As Nintendo’s consoles evolved over the decades, so too did Mario, with the series going on to sell more than 450 million copies worldwide. This special edition explores the origins and lasting influence of the iconic franchise through an in-depth interview with creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s Representative Director and Fellow.
From the ingenuity of early pixel-art graphics created within the limitations of just 40KB of ROM capacity to rare development materials and the evolution of Mario’s character design, the book offers a fascinating look at the creative history behind one of gaming’s most enduring icons.
