Colourful Japan: 226 Posters from the Collection

From floor to ceiling, this expansive exhibition showcases the Stedelijk Museum's beautiful collection of Japanese posters ranging from 1937 to present day. 'Colourful Japan' presents a myriad of styles and forms of graphic communication ranging from vivid, loud and colourful posters to a more simplistic, soft and poetic approach. This immersive exhibition also celebrates the late Japanese graphic designer Shigeru Watano (1937–2012), whose connection with Japan proved vital to expanding the Stedelijk Museum's collection and thus making this exhibition possible. 'Colourful Japan' presents a vibrant array of work by designers such as Hiroshi Ochi, Kazumasa Nagai, Ikko Tanaka, Yusaku Kamekura and Mitsuo Katsui to name a few. The visual language explored by Japanese designers in the collection differs greatly over the vast period of time, making this a fantastically diverse and insightful exhibition – definitely not one to miss!
